“Cognitive skills like attention, memory, and problem-solving are built over time with deliberate practice. Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think!”
Much like an athlete or musician, Play Attention students improve their skills through regular practice. Training is based on weekly sessions where students meet with their coach in-person and are monitored and guided as they complete cognitive activities as part of their custom training plan. Over time, as a student achieves goals, activities adapt to provide additional challenge that pushes growth.
Engagement with Portal’s Certified Play Attention coaches begins with a half-hour online consultation where we learn about the potential student’s areas of struggle and introduce you to the Play Attention system of neurocognitive training. The next step after a consultation is to schedule a student assessment.
Consultation
COST: Free of Charge
Before we can create a custom cognitive training program for the student it is imperative to gain a measurable understanding of areas of concern discussed in the initial consultation. We employ standardized FOCUS testing and Vanderbilt Assessment forms to build a comprehensive picture of the student’s performance and create a baseline from which to build skills.
Assessment
COST: $95
Cost is based on number of hours per week that the student participates in training. The quoted example price is based on our typical recommended 1 hour of training per week broken into 2-half hour sessions. These in-person sessions are scheduled at least 2 days apart and can occur on weekday afternoons and evenings and weekend mornings.
Persistent, deliberate practice and challenge is the key to progress in the Play Attention system. As such, students must commit to a minimum 4 month period of training. It is typical to see observable improvements in targeted behaviors after 1 month (4 hours of training).
Training
COST: $450/month (monthly subscription / minimum 4 months)
Progress Assessment and Graduation
As a student progresses through the Play Attention neurocognitive training system, additional FOCUS Tests and Vanderbilt Assessments will be given to measure progress against stated goals. When the stakeholders agree that the student has progressed to the desired level, they will be considered as graduating the program. This is typically achieved after 40 hours of consistent training, but can vary based on the student and consistency of participation. At this stage we expect that permanent brain changes have been achieved.
COST: Included in monthly subscription
Virtual Reality Gameplay Rewards
Although Play Attention training does not take place in Virtual Reality (all cognitive activities run on a desktop PC and monitor), students are rewarded at regular achievement intervals with free VR gameplay at Portal throughout their participation.
COST: Included for free as program achievement rewards.
In addition, all active Portal Play Attention students receive a 20% discount on regular VR Booth rentals.
